The history behind the family of President Obama's mother, Ann Dunham and her family in a small rural Indiana community, reveals a very important story about the role they played in history.
Barack Obama is not only the first black President of the United States, but his ancestral ties to Indiana reflect a little known insight into the impact his mother's side of the family played in the States' educational, medical, and political history. On land that was once owned by the Miami Indians, Ann Dunham's ancestors worked the soil and labored for a better life in this great country they so deeply cherished. When Shawn Christopher Clements purchased the old farmhouse many years ago in Kempton Indiana, he had no knowledge of its past or of the path he would journey in saving it for future generations. He has spent the last several years restoring the house and raising funds to do so, but in today’s political and economic climate, that has become difficult. He started a garden on the property to donate produce to local charities but has been rebuffed by organizations who hear that it’s ‘Obama food’ ...and they refuse it. The house has endured vandalism and many people have removed themselves from any association with it because of their politics, without considering its rich history and architecture.
The Dunham House is more than just the ancestral home of our President, it’s a true symbol of the American melting pot. People like the Dunhams and their ancestors came to the United States not only for a better life, but to participate in a radical idea that every race, creed and color could work together to make a better life for everyone. It’s that ideal that future generations cannot afford to discard.
The Dunham House is a symbolic representation of the multiculturalism on which this country was built. This documentary shares the challenges all generations face...to embrace diversity and to welcome our differences as a people in an ever changing world.
